All About OUR Flax

There are a few different places you can get flax from nowadays, but North Dakota is one of the main producers in the United States! It grows well in our cooler climate, as well as across the border in Canada. When you drive by a full field of blooming flax, it almost looks like a body of water with the gorgeous bluish-purple color. They don’t blossom long, but when they do, it’s beautiful.

Our flax grows all summer long, cared for and harvested by local farmers. When it’s harvested, it then heads to the mill, and let me tell you - this mill is amazing. I’ve seen some smaller decent mills, but this mill…I’d eat off the floor in this place. It is SPOTLESS. Plus, it’s another small, family owned business - a three generation farm who we can work closely with to create the best product possible.

After it’s cold-milled, it goes right into our bags and we ship it out to you! There is no flax sitting around forever getting old - it is the most recent crop, milled to order. That means it is FRESH. We know when every single bag was milled, and out of which batch of flax. Each batch is tested for it’s fatty acid profile and purity.

We could purchase and sell you whole flaxseeds, but cold-milled has way more benefits for our horses. Many people that purchase flax for human consumption purchase whole versus the ground or cold-milled, and then grind it themselves in small batches. Most of us don’t want to, or don’t have the time to, do that every single day for our horses.

Feeding whole flaxseeds to horses just isn’t an effective method - most will just come out the same way they went in and aren’t really digested. You could grind whole seeds by hand every day, but I find that to be tedious and would much rather just take a scoop out of the bag! Here’s where the cold-milled flax comes in handy. Due to the cold-milling process, it has a nearly 2 year shelf life! Seriously. I’ve never had it long enough to go bad, and always store it in a nice container in a cool place, but this stuff is really stable.

I always say, if I didn’t think it was good enough to feed my own horses (and dogs), I wouldn’t sell it to you. I truly believe in this product and in providing you with a high quality supplement to enhance your horse’s diet.
