Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs:

  1. Is your flax fresh?

    • You bet! Our flax doesn’t sit in a warehouse for months or years - you receive product freshly milled in small batches from the most recent flax crop! Typically we mill once a month, so at MOST, you will get a product that was milled 30-40 days ago.

  2. What IS flaxseed?

    • Flaxseed is the seed from the plant Linum usitatissimum. The seeds contain protein, lignans, and the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid, also known as ALA or omega-3. Flaxseeds, sometimes called linseeds, are small seeds that can be brown, tan or golden colored. They can be consumed whole but are even more beneficial when ground.

  3. Why should I buy from you?

    • At Turtle Mountain Flax, we put the customer first. We know what it’s like to order a product and not get what you expected, or not get the product at all - we stick to high standards! We strive to ship all orders within 2 business days so you never have to wait too long to get it. When you purchase your flax here, you know you’re getting a product from right here in ND and will receive top notch customer service from our small family business.

  4. So, what is cold-milling?

    • Cold milled flaxseed is never exposed to heat. The whole flaxseed enters the mill at room temperature, stays at room temp while it is milled, is packaged and stored at room temp away from any heat or light sources. This also prevents oxidation and reduction of nutrients. This milling process keeps all the nutrients and Omega-3 intact. This process does not heat, hammer, grind, or separate the flax oil from the seed. Our cold milling process provides a way to make Omega-3 feed more digestible and palatable with the absolute best quality of Omega-3 cold milled flax. Basically, the seed is the same product, just in a different form. Towards the bottom of this page you can see the difference between this milling process & grinding.

  5. Can I see the nutritional analysis!

    • You bet! It’s downloadable on each product’s page or you can click here for flax or here for H pellets.

  6. Where should I store my flaxseed?

    • A cool, dry place is best. You do not want to expose your flaxseed to any high temperatures or moisture or risk it spoiling. No refrigeration is required! Many of our customers store in a sealed tote in their barn out of direct sunlight. You’ve got nearly 2 years before it’ll spoil if kept properly, but typically no one keeps it around that long without using it all up!

  7. How does flax benefit my horse?

    • There are MANY benefits to feeding flax, including but not limited to improved skin & coat, strengthened hooves, improved joint mobility, reduction in inflammation, relief from allergies, maintaining a healthy weight and more!

  8. Any guarantees?

    • Your satisfaction is our goal - we make it easy to shop online, from anywhere, 24/7. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us! You’re always welcome to call & order over the phone as well!

  9. How long does flaxseed last?

    • We stand behind our up-to-2 year shelf life, if you do your part and store it properly! Humidity is what’ll reduce that so if you live where it’s humid, store it in an airtight tote.

  10. How much should I feed my horse?

    • 1/2 cup to 1 cup is the average for a 1000-1200 lb horse. If your horse is smaller or larger, please adjust proportionally. You will want to build up to the daily dose gradually over a period of 7-10 days. Start at the lower end of the dose and adjust if you’re not seeing the desired results. Do not overfeed. When in doubt, speak with your veterinarian or nutritionist.

  11. Can I feed it to my dog too?

    • You sure can! Horses, sheep, pigs, cows, dogs & cats, alpacas, chickens, etc can all benefit from flax. Of course, your dog will need a fraction of the dose, so don’t go feeding them the whole cup ;)

  12. Can I feed both flax & h*mp pellets at the same time?

    • Absolutely. Most horses can benefit from both supplements and they complement each other well. One is high in fat, low in protein, and the other is the opposite! My horses & dogs get both daily.

  13. Can I pick up product instead of having it shipped?

    • You sure can (Starkweather, ND)! Or you can get in on our delivery route around ND too! Just send us a message regarding either option and we’ll set it up. You also get a discount for having it picked up or dropped off versus shipped!

  14. Does flaxseed provide any other nutrients other than Omega-3s?

    • You bet! Flax is a great source of many essential nutrients, including Vitamin E, Folic Acid, Riboflavin, Potassium, Calcium, Phosphorus and more!

  15. Isn’t ground the same as milled?

    • We’ll let a photo show you the difference. Ground flax typically looks more fine, like flour. Milled is thinly sliced and you can see parts of the seeds, the hull, etc.

Our cold-milled flax on the left, a ground type on the right. Many find that ground gets much more “gummy” in your horses buckets too.
