Flax vs H Pellets

If you’re new here, I’m sure you’re wondering the differences and similarities between our flax and h*mpseed pellets. We send our batches for testing for many things, including purity, fat, protein, minerals, carbs, etc. Here is a comparison of some of the most commonly asked about parts of the analysis, from our most recent batch:

Fat:

  • Flax - 39.5%

  • H Pellets- 8%

Protein:

  • Flax - 22%

  • H Pellets - 32%

Fiber:

  • Flax - 12%

  • H Pellets - 34%

WSC, ESC & starch:

  • Flax - 3.8%, 1.6% & 0.2%

  • H Pellets- 3.5%, 2.6% & 0.3%

Major Minerals (Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Potassium):

  • Flax - Calcium 0.23%, Phosphorus 0.47%, Magnesium 0.32% & Potassium 0.73%

  • H Pellets - Calcium 0.16%, Phosphorus 1.4%, Magnesium 0.59% & Potassium 1%

Trace Minerals (Iron, Zinc, Copper):

  • Flax - Iron 26 mg/lb, Zinc 20 mg/lb, Copper 4 mg/lb

  • H Pellets - Iron 89 mg/lb, Zinc 34 mg/lb, Copper 9 mg/lb

As with any addition to your horse’s diet, it’s all about balance. Ideally horses should have a 2:1 calcium to phosphorus ratio, which you can see in flax is the opposite. The rest of your horse’s diet plays a part in the entire balance, and when in doubt speak with your vet or a nutritionist :)
